Liege, the most thriving town in Belgium, is finely situated at | the junction of the Ourthe with the Meuse in a rich valley, be- | tween the heights of S. Walburge and Cornillon, which is very productive in vegetables. It derives its name from the little stream Légie, better known by the title of Ri de Coq-Fontaine, which rises in the heights of Ans and runs into the Meuse: that part of the town through which it flows bears the impress of hay- ing been the origin of the city, its streets being narrow and winding. From 971 to 1006 its see was filled by the celebrated Notger, formerly Abbat of S. Gall m Switzerland : he greatly enlarged the town, erected a number of hastion-towers , dug a canal which passes at the foot of the heights crowned by the churches of S. Martin and the Holy Cross, and rebuilt the cathedral of SS. Peter-and Lambert, which occu- pied the square in front of the episcopal Palace and was destroyed Mm 1795. ; {n 1134 Pope Innocent If and §. Bernard came hither ; the pon- tiff'sang mass in the cathedal and there crowned the Empr. Lo- thaire and his Empress: the chapter of S. Lambert was at that time the noblest known; of its 60 canons, 9 were sons of kings, |
