Environs: At a little distance from the town,.on the Dyle, is the Castle of Hrver.i, the residence of the Duke d’Aremberg : until the middle of the XVI cent..the office of royal chamberlain belon- eed by right to its possessor : here is an extensive forest which abounds with game. Outside the walls of Louvain took place in Aug. 1831 the me- morable engagement between the Dutch and Belgians, when the latter ran away, and their new king Leopold, who commanded them in person, narrowly escaped being taken prisoner. “At Lerrparn is a Romanesque Chapel, o. 1180, ded. to the Holy Cross, but commonly called $. Verona’s, after a daughter of Louis, King of Germany, who was buried here. The Rly. , shortly after quitting Louvain, passes the Norbertine Abbey of Parck, rt., founded in 1129 by Godfrey le Barbu, Duke of Lorraine ; the present buildings, now again in possession of the order, were erected in the XV1 and XVII cents.; the church contains some fine carvings. After passing through a cutting the line is carried along an embankment, 48 ft. above the level of the surrounding country. 44 kil. Verrryck. 7 Kil. Tintemonr (FL. Thienen or Thienhoven) — Inns : H. du Plat d’Etain; — H. des Flandres; both on the Grande Place. 44,931 Inhabs. This town, seated on the great Gette, existed in the IX cent. when it was pillaged by the Normans; rebuilt shortly after, it quickly increased, and, being surrounded with a fosse and walls in the early part of the XV cent., it became a place of 1 importance. Its fortifications were greatly strengthened, 1596- 1604; the French and Dutch sacked it and levelled its ramparts in 1635. It was in great part destroyed by a fire in 1604 caused J by the negligence of a workman; it has never recovered from this disaster, the space within the walls, which are nearly 5m. in circumference, being more than half occupied by garden-ground. The Grande Place, in the centre of the town, is very large. The Cuurca or our Lavy or the Lake, (N.
