Full text | 28% Route 23. LOUVAIN.» From Mechlin S. Gertrune’s, founded ¢. 1200, was originally the Chapel of the Dukes of Brabant, but Henry I in 1206 gave it to the noble Canons of §. Augustine whose monastery was, at the request of Philip yAsseuré, erected into an Abbey by Pope Nicholas V in 1449. The Abbey was demolished in 1899. The Church is a fine building ; the Nave and §. Aisle date from the XV cent. ; the Choir 1514-26, the N. Chapel, 1560; and the fine W. Tower, containing a good set of chimes and surmounted by a crocketted stone steeple of open work flanked by % angle turrets, 1453-5 ; the balustrade which unites the latter is modern. The carved oak Stalls in the Choir hy J. Beyaert? axe very fine; they are adorned with detached groups, statnettes, and 28 bas-reliefs repr. the principal events in the life of Christ surrounded with exquisite foliage : they have been carefully restored by G. Goyers and sons; the canopy is mo- dern. §. Aisle: Tr. repr. the Carriage of the Cross, Crucifixion and Resurrection by M. Van Cocacyen. N. Chapel : Mater dolo- rosa by P. J. Verhaghen and the M. H. Trinity by G. De Craeyer. Sacristy : Fine Reliquary of silver gilt, adorned with statuettes of S. Gertrude, the B. V., and S. Catherine, XIV cent. Brass holy water vat, XVI cent. Chasuble, Dalmatic and Tunic with embroidered orphreys, XVI cent. The Church of the little Beguinage, close by, contains nothing of interest. Norre Dame, formerly the Dominicans’ Church, built. by Henry LI of Brabant, 1230-86, is a fine 1st pointed building , the choir with pentagonal apse was rebuilt in the XV cent. ; and the octagonal caps of the pillars Doricised in the last cent. A wooden turret rises from the roof at the entrance of the choir. The founder and his Duchess are buried between the choir and a chapel of the XVII cent. lined with marble; their tombs were demolished in 1762. The misericordes of the stalls are carved with subjects from the Old Test. The paintings repr. the 15 mys- teries of the Rosary are by P. J. Verhaghen, A. Clevenbergh and Van Dorne; the statue of S. Marculph by G. Goyers. The con- yentual buildings were demolished in 1797. S. James’, a 3 aisled cruciform building on the Bies Pleyn, founded c. 1200 and made a parochial church in 1252, was, with the exception of the tower, almost entirely burnt in 1350, and rebuilt shortly after. On N. of choir is a fine pyramidal Taber- nacle with a brass halustrade made in 1467 by J. Velder? Here are also an old painting , commemorative of the plague of 1578, in which the church is figured; another repr. the Conversion of S. Hubert, the figure is by G. De Craeyer, the animals by F. Sny- ders, and the landscape by J. D’Artois; a tower monstrance with statuette of the B. V. and Child with 2 angels holding a ‘ { |
