Full text | to Liege. WESPELAER. Route 23. 277 passes from the Province of Antwerp into that of Brabant. On ]. is Rymenant, where, in 1578, the Confederates gained a bloody victory over the Spanish under Don John of Austria and the Prince of Parma. Further on, on rt., is Boort Mrenperx, the Church of which has.a fine stone tower and spire, and contains a painting of the temptation of S. Antony hy D. Tenters the youn- ger, 1666. 41 kil. Hareur. In the Church of Campennotr, not far from here, 1650-1752, is a finely carved Pulpit. : 2 kil. Wespetagr. Near here area Park and pleasure-ground, belonging to Gen. de Marnef, laid out in the French style by the architect Henry of Louvain in 1790; the statues are by Gode- charles : the grounds are much resorted to in summer by the citizens of Brussels, Mechlin, and Louvain; strangers are always admitted. Onl. is RorseLarR where is an_old tower, 7 stories high, formerly part of the Castle of the Lords of that village. After crossing the Dyle the line passes Kessettoo, on l., not far from which is the Abbey of VuierBern, rebuilt 1776-90 by Dewez, and considered the finest of his architectural productions ; the body of the Church is; formed by a rotundo surrounded hy 8 coupled Corinthian columns; on rt. and |. 2 arches give access to 2 chapels, while a 3rd arch forms the entrance to the choir, raised considerably above the body of the church : its apse is adorned with statues of Faith, Hope and Charity. At E. end of choir is a tower surmounted by a cupola. 41 kil. Louvain Stat. To establish this stat. the ground has been lowered from 1 to 10 ft. Omnibuses and vigilantes await the arrival of every train. Lovyat (Fl. Loven). This town, seated on the Dyle and Voer, is of anct. origin; its name is derived from Joo, a shell, and ven, a fen, being built on a hill.in the midst of fens. In 885, the Normans entrenched themselves strongly and remained here 7 years until they were routed, 1 Sept. 891, by the Empr. Arnold at the head of an army of Saxons, Bavarians and Franconians : their camp, enlarged by Arnold became the town of Louvain, and, in X cent., the capital ofacounty. Ansfred, the 1st of its Counts mentioned in history, died in 985; his successors rapidly increased their dominions until in 1106 Godfrey I, surnamed le Barbu, was invested with the title of Duke of lower Lotharingia; soon after this they fixed their residence at Brussels, but continued notwithstanding to favour A6 |
