Full text | 268 Route 21. VILVORDE. . From Antwerp friend, and with difficulty persuaded Van Dyck to depart for Venice : the legend does not state what became of the young lady whose parents refused to entertain the artist’s proposal of marriage, but the story is easily proved to be untrue, as in the first place the S. Marlin is not a portrait of Van Dyck, and in the 2nd he lett Antwerp on the 8rd of Oct. and arrived at Genoa in November 1621, quick travelling for those days. The Genealogy of the B. V. no longer exists, it was converted into a sack to carry off some corn in by a party of soldiers who plundered the village at the com- mencement of the French Rey. In 1751 the churchwardens sold the S. Martin for 4,000 florins to a Mr. Hoet, a dealer from the Hague, but the villagers, armed with pitchforks, flew to the rescue of their treasure, and the dealer narrowly escaped with his life; in 1794 it was carried off to Paris by the French and there care- fully restored ; in 1816 it was sent to Brussels, whence the inhabs. of this village brought it in a triumphant procession, 413 Oct. 4816. In 1854 a man named Janssens, now in prison at Brussels for other robberies, undertook to steal it and carry it on board a barge stationed at a spot called Buda on the canal of Wille- broeck : a sick person who lived close to the church, hearing a noise, gave the alarm and the robber decamped. On quitting Vilvorde, the Rly., leaving the Penitentiary on rt. passes through the plain of Rayssexe, where, in the celebrated medieval Flem. romance of the war of Grimberghe, a poem of 12,000 lines, is laid the scene of the battle of the Cradle. Further on is Never Henpenk, on rt., the oldest village in the neighbour- hood of Brussels; it is mentioned in a deed of King Theodoric’s, 673, confirming its possession to the Abbey of S. Vaast near Arras ; its Church has a massive square tower of stone, which has more the appearance of a feudal citadel than a church-tower, being pierced only with small loop-hole windows : here are also the remains ofa Castle of the end of the XV cent. On approaching Brussels, the PaLace or Larxen, belonging to the King of the Belgians, is seen at some distance on rt. It was built in 1782 for the Austrian Governor of the Netherlands, and enlarged by Napoleon in 1803, who several times visited this residence ; it has been said that Napoleon planned his disastrous Russian campaign here, but there is not the least truth in this assertion, the Emperor not haying been here at all in 4812. The palace itself is a fine building handsomely furnished ; strangers are admitted to see it during the absence of the Royal family ; the park and gardens are very beautiful. The remains of a Gaulo-Roman villa have heen recently discovered near the village of Laeken. The old Church, a cruciform building with pentagonal apse and square tower al the intersection of the cross, dates from the XIL{ cent., |
