Trans. : Tr. by A. De Bie, a native of the town, c. 1620, repr. in centre, S. Eloy preaching, and on side-panels, doing works of mercy : in frontof the altar, over which this paint- ing is placed, is a finely carved oak altar-rail of XVI cent. N, Aisle: A black image of the B. V., XII cent. ; bas-relief of the Entombment, XVII cent. The Tower contains a tolerable set of chimes. In this Church took place in 1294 the espousals of the unfortunate Philippine, daughter of Count Guy de Dampierre, and the Prince of Wales; and on 20 Oct. 1496 the marriage of Philip the Handsome and Joanna of Castille. Opposite the N. entrance of the Church is the Chapel of S. Peter where are the tomb of 5. Gommaire who died here c. 774, and 2 small stained glass win- dows by F. Pluys. Close by are the Jesuit’s Church and 8. Elisabeth’s, neither of which contain any objects of interest. The Hotel de Ville is a stone building in had style, 1740; at one end of it is the Brrrror, commenced 1367-9, recommenced in 1444, and terminated in 1413. The lower stage is square, the upper octagonal crowned by a small spire. Its great bell was a part of the booty carried off from Braine-le-Comte by the archers and crosshowmen of Lierre, who formed part of the army under the command of the Count deS. Pol that, in 1424, drove the English under the Duke of Rochester out of Hainault. A peculiar kind of beer named cavesse is made here. Heyst op pen Benca is a village near here, }uilt on a hill, the view from which is very extensive, embracing on a clear day upwards of 30 towns and villages. 8 kil. .Nyzew. 6 kil. Bouwet. 6 kil. Henentaats. Inn: H. de la ville de Lierre, Grande Place. 4,370 Inhabs. This town, rebuilt: in 1209 by Henry I, Duke of Brabant, was surrounded by walls in the beginning of the XV cent. It was for a long time considered the capital of the Campine. |
