Full text | to Liege. LOUVAIN. Route 23. 279 is pierced by 3 rows of windows, 28 in number ; between these are canopied niches the brackets of which are exquisitely sculptured with groups of figures designed by H. Stuerbout; the subjects, selected by John van der Phalisen, Rector of S. Peter’s and Br. James, Doctor in Theology, of the Dominican convent, repr. the principal scenes of the Old and New Testaments; the series com- mences on the ground-floor at the 1. side, and is continued from 1, tort. The roof-is very high and would give the building a heavy appearance were it not for the beautiful octagonal towers of open work placed at the angles an! 2 others still loftier which rise from the centre of the gable at either end. The exterior has been carefully restored under the direction of D. Everaerts at an expense of 224,540 frs. defrayed partly by the town and province, and partly by the govt.; the 6 turrets, pinnacles, niches and car- yed work are all new; the delicately sculptured brackets of a spongy stone from the quarries of Avesnes, which had suffered much from time and weather, have been replaced by copies executed by G. Goyers in a more durable kind of stone from Hordain in France; these copies are very inferior to the originals the character of both the draperies and faces of the figures having been completely changed, the latter have now quite a Greek type. The niches, 282 in number, which had always remained empty, are to be filled with statues of celebrated persons connected with. the history of the town; 18 of these have been already placed in the lowest series of the principal facade; they repr. Quentin Mas- sys, Walter van der Leyen, and Pope Adrian VI, hy G. Goyers ; Peter Coutereel, Thierry Stuerbout, and Erasmus, by S. Van Aer- schodt; Diveus, Justus Lipsius, Matthew De Layens, John of Westphalia, the burgomaster Van De Ven, and Van Espen, by P. Puyenbroeck; Martin V, Wm. de Zadeleere, Lonis Elzevir, Ar- nold van der Hofstad, Henry Rega, and Erycius Puteanus, by C. 11. Geerts. Access is gained to the interior hy a double staircase of stone constructed in 1709 when the anct. one of 1476 with its railing of wrought iron by J. Metsys was destroyed. The large hall, Salle des pas perdus, has a fine oak roof, the beams of which rest on. corbels carved with subjects from the Old Test. by W. Ards, 1449. On either side of the raised platform at the end are 2 doors, one leading to the porters’ apartments built in 1460, the other to the anct. treasury of the town, the vaulting of which is adorned with has-reliefs in Ayesnes stone by J. Beyaert, 1469 : the windows were originally protected by a railing of wrought iron executed in 1449 by G. Van Dueringen (these are now in the granary) : here are also a painting of the Holy Family with S. Norbert and S. Clare hy 4. Van Diepenbeeck; flowers and fruit by D. Seghers, etc. |
