Full text | 976 Route 23. TURNHOUT. From Mechlin the translation of the bodies to the Church of Gheel. Here are also a repetition of the Last Supper painted by Leonardo Da Vinci for Henry VII; a $. Herman Joseph by A. Van Dyck, a Holy Family of Rubens’ school, and a landscape with cattle by B. P. Ommeganck. Thelibrary contains a fine collection of theological works amongst which are some rare early printed books, and some Mss., the most noteworthy of which are a Bible that belonged to S. Thomas a Becket, and the Missal of Charles VI of France. At present there are 29 canons resident in this Abbey besides 43 who, having the care of parishes in the neighbourhood, live at their cures; formerly the greater number of the parish chur- ches in the Campine besides ‘many others in Brabant were served by this Order. § kil, Licprarnt. 3 kil. This town, enlarged by Henry IV in 4912, was long a favorite residence of the Dukes of Brabant on account of the forest in the neighbourhood which then abounded with game. In 1381 it was taken by Maurice of Nassau and re- taken by the Spanish who were afterwards completely routed outside the town by the allies with a loss of 3000 men, 24 Jan. 4397. In 1648 it was given by Philip IV to Amelia de Solms, widow of Frederic Henry of Nassau, Stadtholder of Holland; in 1702, William III of England dying without children, it was by a decree of the feudal Court of Brabant, 26 May 1708, adjudged to the King of Prussia on condition of his paying 100,000 florins to John William, Prince of Orange;.and in 1783 it returned to Maria Theresa. On 27 Oct. 1799 the Austrians were defeated here by the Brabant patriots under Van der, Meersch. A fine Castle was built here at the commencement of the XV cent. by Maria, Duchess of Guelders, and daughter of John Ul, Duke of Brabant; its remains now serve as the Palais de Justice. The Church isa fine 3 aisled cru- ciform building with W. Tower and spire. At PostgL, 6 m. from here, is a large Premonstratensian Abbey. ROUTE 23. MECHLIN TO LOUVAIN, TIRLEMONT AND LIEGE.
