Full text | to Brussels. i VILVORDE. Route 21. 267 are filled with stamed glass in the style of the XVI cent., by J. B. Capronnier, vepr. the Dukes of Burgundy, the Empr. Maximi- lian, Charles V, Philip II, Albert and Isabella; in another are some carved doors from the Abbey of Malone, and some fine old furniture; there is also a gallery of paintings and armour. The Church of Worvertnem has a fine square W. Tower of XII cent.; its Choir dates from the end of the XV cent.; the Nave, a Romanesque construction, was rebuilt: in 1834. The Church of Macueven, built entirely of stone, consists of a Choir, 2 side Chapels, a Trans., c. 1500, and an isolated square Tower of XIII cent. ; it contains an anct. Rool with figures of 5S. Mary and John, a fine Renaissance allar, and a painting of the death of S. Gertrude by J. Cossiers, 1634. The Church of SteeNockenzest is a 8 aisled cruciform build- ing with apsidal choir in flamboyant style. It contains a paint- ing of S. Bernard by G. De Craeyer, a good portrait of a rector of the parish, 1606, and a carved Confessional, 1665 ; beneath the tower, which contains an old carillon composed of 42 bells, is the tomb of Sir John yan Hamme, Councillor and Chamberlain of Edward Ill of England, d. 1382, who took part in 29 hattles on land and 27 on sea, and his children Joho and Margaret, whose recumbent effigies adorn it. The Castle of Ham dates from c. 1520; its appearance has heen much altered by the present proprietor. The Church of Humercuem dates in. part from the XII cent. : close to. it is a picturesque stone house of the commencement of the XVI cent. The Ghurch of Errs, a cruciform building, has a fine pointed Choir, the remainder of the edifice dates from 1710-74 ; it contains 2 paintings of S. Barbara and S. Donatus by Verhaegen, 1785. The Church of Saventaem, a 3 aisled cruciform huilding with square tower at the intersection of the cross, contains an admirable copy by Van Dyck of Rubens’ picture of S. Martin dividing his cloak with a beggar, now in the Queen’s collection at Windsor, for which he received 200 florins. There is ‘a foolish story al- tached to this painting which says that Van Dyck, having made great progress, was advised by his master, Rubeus, to go to Italy and complete his studies there ; he set out, but had proceeded only as far as this village when he fell in love with a young girl of the place, at whose request he painted 2 pictnres for the church, one, the Genealogy of the B. V., in which he introdnced portraits of his mistress aud her parents, the other, in’ which he repre- sented himself as $. Martin, riding on the white horse given him by Rubens fer his journey.
