Full text | to Brussels. VILVORDE. Route 21. 269 the Choir are exquisitely carved Stalls, 49 ft. long by 15 ft. high; the cornice is sustained by 12 twisted columns between. which are busts of the Apostles supported by brackets ; in addition to these there are angels bearing the instruments of the Passion, and bas-reliefs of Old Test. subjects ; there were formerly returned stalls, but these were pulled down and sold by the churchwardens about 20 years ago, on the pretence that they blocked up the view of the choir! These stalls, carved in 1663, were brought hither from the priory of Groenendael on its suppression in 1783. Here are also 2 paintings, the Visitation by Portaels, and a Mater Do- lorosa by Verhaegen : a Monstrance of massive silver, 1685, and some embroidered vestments which formerly belonged to the Abbey of Dilighem. The marriage of Count Louis de Maele with Mar- garet, 2nd daughter of John II, took place here in June 1347. The Beguinage, founded in the XLII cent., was suppressed in 4796; the buildings, which date from: 1622, now serve for sunday schools. There isa Gony. of Carmelite nuns with a school attached : the Church, which has a tower surmounted by a cupola, was erected 1663-71; here is an old carved image of our Lady of Consolation, brought hither in 1578 from a Convent at Peuthy, to which it had been given by Sophia, wife of Henry I, Duke of Brabant, who had received it from her mother S. Elisabeth of Hungary, to whom it had been given by S. Hedwigis. In the Chap. of the Hospital & a painting of the B. V. and Child appearing to S. Antony of Padua by A. Van Dyck. Exvinons : In the Church of Pevtuy, erected 1628-30, are a finely carved Pulpit, a Holy Family by D. Teniers the younger, 1660, and a painting of the early Flem school repr. a Saint giving alms to the poor. At GRIMBERGHE Was formerly a Premoustratensian Abbey, found- ed by the noble family of Berthout at the commencement of the XI cent.; all that remains is a stone gateway which dates only from 1767. The Church, S. Servais, 4660-1704, is a fine 3 aisled cruciform building with semicircular apses to choir and trans. At the intersection of the cross is an octagonal cupola surmounted by a lantern shaped dome, and at the E. end of the S. chapel a square tower 200 ft. high. MInteriorly the choir and trans. are ornamented with Corinthian pilasters while the nave and aisles are of the modern louic order. Sculpture : The Choir-Stalls are well carved; between them and the High Altar, sculptured by Langher- mans, ave the monument erected to the memory of the Abbats in 4710, and that of Sir Eugene de Bergues, 1674 : John Leslie, Bp. of Ross, and Councillor of Mary Queen of Scots, d. 1596, is also interred here.
