From Contich™ compartments are the remaining events of the Passion, as also statuettes of David, Baruch, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, etc.; on the shutters are paintings of the early Limburg school repr. SS. Antony, Nicholas, George, Catherine, Barbara and Adrian, and on the reverse the Eternal Father enthroned with Christ and the B. V. interceding for the world; the Agony in the garden; the Healivg of the soldier’s ear; the risen Saviour appearing to His disciples, and the Descent of the Holy Ghost; c. 1460. In another chapel are 2 ex-votos, carved and polychromatised, of the Descent from the Cross and the Crucifixion, with figures of the donors kneeling, c. 1510. S. Trans.: Tr.; in centre, the Nati- yity ; on side-panels, S. Benedict and S. Dympna wilh the doxors, 1638 : the Martyrdom of S. Dympna by J. Maes, 1641. Sacristy : a large silver shrine of Renaissauce style, c. 1625 ; it contains the body of S.-Dympna and is exposed at Whitsuntide and on the 15th of May, but cannot be seen at other times without difficulty. Built against the S. aisle is an old Hospice, founded in the XUL cent. for the use of pilgrims to the shrine of 8. Dympna. This Saint, born in the VII cent., was the daughter of a pagan Irish king who had the misfortune to lose his queen to whom he was very much attached : he then fell into a fit of melancholy, asa cure for which he was advised by his nobles to espouse his own daughter, who so much resembled her mother that he might easily imagine his wife to be revived in her person. Dympna, horror-struck at her father’s unnatural proposal, asked to be allow- ed 40 days for consideration, in the course of which, acting by the advice of an aged priest, named Gerebernus, who had private- ly baptized her, she left her native isle and set sail, accompanied by him, 3 of her. maids and 2 serfs, for Antwerp; thence they continued their journey until they arrived here, where they found a small chapel, ded. to S. Martin, near which, at a place called Zammel, they constructed for themselves 2 huts where they spent - their time in fasting and prayer. In the meantime the king, en- raged at his daughter’s flight, set out in pursuit of her, and, in course of time, also arrived at Antwerp, from whence he sent his followers in all directions to scour the country in search of her. Some of them stopped at an inn at the village of Westerloo, where they offered in payment some coin of their own country ; the host told them that he had in his possession. some pieces of a similar description, but that he was ignorant of their value: he further informed them that he had received them in payment for food from an Irish virgin who lived in retirement in the neigh- bouring desert with a venerable Priest.
