Full text | to Liege. LOUVAIN. Route 23. 281 Avesnes stone are preserved in the Town-Hall, the former was probably, the latter certainly executed by J. Metsys, aided by the sculptor, J. Beyaert : this model, completed in 1524, was re- stored by G. Goyers in 1829. The wooden cupola at the intersection of the cross, in which is placed a pretty set of chimes, was con- structed in 1730. The W. front with its finely carved wooden portal, adorned with statuettes of the Evangelists and Doctors of the Church, is in course of restoration, by M. Lavergne. The interior of the church is very fine; the triforium and clerestory- windows are of good design. Beneath the chancel arch is a highly ornamented stone Roodscreen, c. 1440, and carved gilt, adorned with statuettes of Christ, the B. V., S. John Bap., the Apostles, etc., in niches, and surmounted by a splendid Rood with figures of SS. Mary, John, Paul, Jerome and Gregory the Great: in front of it hangs a 12 branched chandelier of wrought iron, painted and gilt, by J. Metsys, forly. in the chapel of onze lieve Vrouwe daerbuiten, founded in 1373 outside the walls of the town and demolished at French Rey. The anct. Altars beneath the screen, the High Altar and canopied Sedilia of exquisite design were de- molished by some stupid churchwardens about 30 years ago, when the eagle Lectern, which in beauty of design far exceeds any other example known, the Cantors’ stools with low rounded backs, and 2 fine brass Corone were sold; these now adorn the Collegiate Chapel of S. Mary’s, Oscott, near Birmingham. The new standard gas branches were designed by C. Geerts. Beneath the centre of an arch, which separates the choir from its N. aisle, is an hexa- gonal pyramidal Tabernacle, about 46 ft. high, elaborately carved in stone with groups repr. scenes from the Passion and statuettes of the Apostles; the doors of brass are very fine; it was designed by M. De Layens in 1430: the demolition of this taber- nacle was proposed afew years ago on account of its not being in the centre of the apse. The Pulpit, finely carved by Bergé, was executed in 1742 for the Norbertine Abbey of Ninove and trans- ported hither in 1807; it has the form of a rock, about 33 ft. high, from which spring 2 palm trees; on one side is repr. S. Peter repenting for having denied Christ, and on the other the Conversion of §. Paul; the stricken horse and fallen rider are both finely rendered. Chapels : S. Aisle: 1, Tr. ; The trial, tor- turing and martyrdom of §. Dorothy by J. Van Der Baren, 1594. Statue of S. Charles Borromeo by C. Geerts. 2, A.black Byzan- tine crucifix. 3, Ecce Homo carved in high relief, 1523, and 3 aumbryes, XV cent. A painting by J. Van Rillaer yepr. a cook with his apron on (S. Eyortius?), chosen Bp. in consequence of the miraculous descent of a dove upon his head : in the foreground the S. is repr. refusing the mitre, while in the background prepa- A6. |
