Full text | to Liege. LOUVAIN. Route 23. 289 vwindows of the choir, and the buttresses are adorned with niches containing figures of saints. In the trans. are 6 finely carved Confessionals with statues of our Lord, SS. Peter, Paul, Francis, | Clare, Rose, and 2 angels. S. Germain’s is a very anct. cruciform church, having been ' founded in the IX cent. The W. tower, a massive construction with a narthex, dates from the early part of the XII cent.; the choir and chapels are of the transition style, the nave and trans. 3rd pointed. Over the high altar is a Pieta by G. Wappers; in | the choir a brass lectern of XV cent. consisting of an hexagonal | shaft supported by 6 buttresses; the top of the shaft.is richly | embattled; from its centre rises the orb, on which is perched a Pelican billing the blood out of her breast and with her. wings spread abroad to support the rest for the book. Here are also a carved flamboyant Organ-case, 2 anct. carvéd crucifixes, and a pulpit of XVIII cent. with figures of SS. Peter and Paul. The old Church of the Beguinage, now belonging to the Dominicans, is a 2nd pointed daisled building with apsidul chan- cel and lean to aisles; here are an old Rood with statues of the B. V. and S. John, a brass benatura with stone base, a silver re- liquary, XV cent., achalice and some embroidered vestments, XVI cent, The monastic buildings are of the XVI cent. with i) the exception of the cloister which was designed by M. Bethune, 1856. At the Hospice des Infirmes is a fine monstrance, XV cent. : at the Grey Sisters’ Convent, a flamboyant chalice of silver gilt, finely chiselled with figures of our Lord on the Cross, the B. V., and the Evangelistic symbols. The Hospice des | Vieillards, 1830, isa large building worth visiting by those | interested in philanthropic institutions. This is the native town of the learned Jesuit J. Bollandus, one of the commiencers of the Acta Sanctorum, the writers of which | were called, after him, the Bollandists. DILIGENCES ; to Jodoigne daily at 8.30 a. m., 12.50 and 6.25 p, m, in 1 1/2 hr.;. fare, 1 fr c.; to S. Trond on Wed. and Sat. at 5 a.m. in 3 hrs.; fare, 1 fr. 25 ¢.; to Diest on Wed. and Sat, at 6 a. m. in 3 hrs.; fare, 2 frs. 23 ¢. Environs : Outside the Porte S. Trond are 3 large barrows, supposed to be Gaulo-Roman burial mounds; they may beseen from the Rly., to the left. About a mile on rt. of road from here to S. Trond, at a little more than half way between the 2 towns, is Liau, where is a fine church containing many valuable works of art; see Rte., 28, p. 313, 17 |
