Full text | 286 Route 23. LOUVAIN. From Mechlin adorned with coupled Corinthian columns and 2 statues of angels. The University Library, 1723, erected on the site of the anct. Hotel de Ville, adjoining the Halles, is remarkable for the fine woodwork with which its walls are lined, presenting a-series of porticoes supported by composite columns and surmounted by statues of philosophers and anct. writers; it contains 65,000 vols. and 400 Mss., and is open daily, except on Sat., Sun. and festivals from 2 to 8 p.m.; attached to itisa Museum, founded in 1840. The Theatre of Anatomy, 1744, is an octagonal building of brick and stucco surmounted by a cupola. The Colleges of Luxemburg and of the Premonstratensians were rebuilt in 1785, that of Villers in 1760, the Salle des Promotions, called Ficum, in 4766; the College of Driutius, 1778, is a large quadrilateral building with a stone gateway; that of the Pope, founded in 1392 by Adrian VI, was rebuilt in 1776 by Montoyer; the King’s College dates from 1782; the Peda- sogie du Faucon, 4783, in plan and style of ornamentation somewhat resembling the Luxemburg Palace at Paris, is, though incomplete, the finest of all; it is now used as a Military Hos- pital. The Harte avx Draps, founded in 1317, is a: vast edifice, 200 ft. long by 80 wide, isolated on 3 sides; owing to the weavers being banished from the town for their turbulence it was never completed. Tm 1426 Duke John I appropriated it to the use of the University ; it now serves as the schools of law, medecine, and theology. In 1680 a second story was added in modern style. The interior of the lower stage forms a fine hall supported by large cylindrical columns with capitals ornamented with foliage and grotesque figures. The Hospital of S. Peter, founded in 1080, was rebuilt in 4956; a small portion of this date with a 3 aisled Church, Clois- ter and Oratory, of XV cent., still remain; a large and commo- dious Hospital of red brick, designed by Van Arenbergh, 1839-56, has been erected alongside of it. The Cotiection or Paintines, formed by the late M. van den Schrieck, and which now belongs to his sons, n° 86, Rue de Paris, though not exceeding 160 in number, is one of the best in Belgium as regards the works of native masters : the owners with creat liberality admit strangers to see them at all times. Amongst the most noteworthy are: Memding; Portraits of Wm. Morecl, Sheriff of Bruges and wife. — P. Claeyssens; Head of the B. V. — Rubens; the Martyrdom of S. Catherine and 3 sketches, 1, the Marriage of Constantine the Great; 2, Melchisedec offering bread and wine to Abraham, a study for 1 out of 36 subjects executed for the Jesuits’ Church at Antwerp; 3, the Coronation of the B.
