The Brewers’ Guildhall opposite the Hotel de Ville, is a fine building in the Elisabethan style. ; Outside the Porte de. Malines is a small fragment of an old Castle, originally called het Burgt, but which in the XVI cent. obtained the name of Cesar’s castle. Founded in 391 by the Empr. Arnold, it was rebuilt in 1177, 1378, 1466, and again partly in 1503; in 1783 it was demolished by Joseph If. Fora Jong time it was the habitual residence of the Dukes of Brabant; Henry I was assassinated here in 1038; and Thierry, Count.of Holland, was imprisoned here in 1200 : during several months it was occupied by Edward IIf of England, and at alater period Charles V and his sister were educated here under the direction of A. Boyens who afterwards became Pope Adrian VI. The town-walls and ram— parts, now in part converted into boulevarts, were: constructed 1356-61; the lofty round tower, 1462-9; and the Porte de Diest in 1526; this gateway flanked ly 2 hemispherical stone towers was ' converted into a prison. in 1820 when the roof was reconstructed _ ind 2 brick wings added. A new cellular prison is now being constructed near the Rly. Sctretors : The studios of MM. Geerts and Alibeloos, who carved the stalls in the Cathedral at Antwerp, 6, Rue de Savoie, and of MM.
