Full text | 970 Route 22. LIERRE. From Contich la Maison Verte; all on the Grande Place; — H. d’Anvers, Rue WAnvers. 414,608 Inhabs. This town, seated on the confluence of the Great and Little Nethe, was founded in the [X cent. Here Christian I, King of Denmark, found an asylum-in 1593 after having lost his crown. The town suffered much during the religious wars of the XVI cent. ; its for- tifications were demolished in 1784 by Joseph II. The Cuurcu, S. Gommaire, founded in the X or XI cent. and rebuilt in the XV cent., is a noble 3 aisled cruciform building with pentagonal apse and 41 projecting chapels. The Nave and Aisles were erected 1438-43 ; the Trans., 1448-75 ; the Choir, 1473-1815; the W. Tower, the base of which is square and the upper stages octagonal, 1498-7, was formerly surmounted by a lofty steeple, 1435-6, this last, having been twice struck by lightning in 1609 and 1702, was shortly after replaced by a most incongruous cupola. The buttresses are fine and have canopied-niches, the brackets of which are well carved. The windows were formerly filled with stained glass presented by the Abp. of Cambray, Bp. of Liege, Empr. Maximilian I, ete.; most of these have disappeared, but there still remain in the choir the 8 windows of the apse, repr. the donors kneeling with their patron Saints, besides 3 much damaged in the clerestory. In the trans. also 8 of the clerestory- Windows retain considerable fragments; the N. window, repr. Joan of Burgundy, her husband Gaspard de Culembourg, their eldest daughter Elisabeth, and her 2 husbands John de Luxembourg and Antony de Lalaing, is in good. preservation. At the entrance of the choir is an exquisitely sculptured Rood- screen of flamboyant style, 1534; the pillars are of black marble, the remainder of white stone: it is adorned with 8 statuettes of the Evangelists and Doctors of the Church, the 14 Stations of the cross and 4 scenes from the life of S. Gommaire, whose statue crowns the whole, which has been creditably restored with the exception of the turret in the middle and the cresting, which latter would have been much better in metal. Choir: A brass lectern supported by a pedestal and plinth of reddish marble, and adorned with arabesques; it is surmounted by a statuette of S. Bruno and was formerly in the Church of the Carthusians. Am- bulatory and Chapels: A painting by Groenendael, a native of the town, repr. the Education of the B. V.; a Tr. by 0. Van Veen, repr. in centre the Descent of the Holy Ghost, and on sile-panels the Baptism of Christ and the Miracle of the loaves and fishes ; a Last Supper by M. De Vos; a fine Tr. of the School of Memling, repr. in centre the Marriage of the B. V., on side-panels the An- nunciation and Presentation, and on reverse the Donors and their children with S. John Bap. and S. Gommaire? ; the monument of |
