Full text | i oor EST Tore TRI GNNNTIG 954 Route 21. VILVORDE. From Antwerp Herstal and Charlemagne under the names of Fidfortium and Fu- fordia. It is probably the most anct. commune in Brabant, having received from Henvy IL a charter of liberties in 1192: after this the town quickly grew to importance and attained to the height of its splendour in the lll cent. Edward UI of England, with an army of 1600 knightsand 410,000 archers, stopped here during the months of July, Aug. and Sept. 1339; in 1340 he also came hither again to meet and make an alliance with the Duke of Brabant and the principal nobles of the Low Countries against the French. Its fortifications, erected at the end of the X11 cent., were rebuilt in 1337; these consisted of a wall and moat with 4 gates defended by 25 towers. Eighteen years later a strong: castle was construc- ted by Duke Wenceslaus. The war between Brabant and Flan- ders, 1356-7, caused the town rapidly to decline; in 1435-6 it was ravaged by a pestilence; in 1489 it was surprised by the citizens of Brussels, who had taken up.arms against Maximilian; the ereater part of the garrison was massacred, the Hotel de Ville, Cloth-Hall, Butchery and 3 quarters of the town burnt. In 1511 a fire broke out and consumed nearly a quarter of the town. In 4577 the castle and town were occupied by the army of the States General. On 16 Apr. 1580 the Calvinists for the first time held a public service, the preacher being one David Arundel; an English- man. The garrison, which consisted of Scotchmen, not having received their pay, determined on betraying the city to the Spa- niards, but the plot was discovered and one John Cuby, the prin- cipal instigator, drawn and quartered. In 1584 the Spaniards recovered possession of the town; in1745 the Duke of Cumberland established his head-quarters here. The Castle, constructed by Duke Wenceslaus in 1375 for a state prison, much resembled. the Bastille. W. Tindal, translator of the Bible into English, having fled from England to avoid the penal laws established by Henry VIII, came to Antwerp and thence to Vilvoide, where he was arrested at the instigation of the Eng. Govt. and, after having been in prison here for 1 year and 435 days, was burnt alive with a Lutheran named Martin Vyer in 1836. The Castle was demolished in 1774, and a Penitentiary erected on its site by Dewez, 1778-9, his last public work ; it is a huge quadrangular edifice with loophole windows, large enough to re- -ceive $50 prisoners, 728 in night cells, 78 in cells for complete separate coufinement, and 82 in the infirmary : it is under the di- rection of a governor, subgovernor, 4 chaplains and 12 brothers of our Lady of Pity. The Cuurcu, a 3 aisled cruciform building with polygonal apse and % towers, one square, the other octagonal, on N. and S. of the cheir, dates from the XIV cent., but has heen much altered. In |
