The throne, on which the hody of Charlemagne was oivated, is now kept in the upper gallery ofthe nave, Hochmunster; is made of white marble and in shape somewhat resembles seat of Edward the Confessor at Westminster Abbey. The arches ii) the gallery are adorned with 32 pillars of marble, granite and jomrphyry, brought by Charlemagne, partly from the Exarch’s ssfalace at Rayenna, and partly from Rome: the finest of these, semoved to Paris by the French in 1794, were brought back in -{315, and have been repolished and replaced at the expense of the oping of Prussia, The interior of the dome was originally adorned ith mosaics, remains of which may still be seen. In the side- sjapel of S. Nicholas is placed an antique sarcophagus of Parian eiavble in which the feet of Charlemagne’s body originally rested iitrithin his tomb ; it is adorned with a fine bas-relief of the rape of zo roserpine. 1) Eastward of the old apse Otho IIf built a chapel in which be {2pas buried; hoth of these were pulled down in the XIV cent. othen the present choir, which has preserved the plan of Otho’s hapel, was erected ; his tomb is exactly beneath the present high ‘sitar: The Choir, commenced in 1333, was not consecrated until 443; it is 114 ft. high and is pierced by numerous windows jiAhich give it a very light appearance; they are filled with modern jaimained glass of inferior design by Cornelius of Berlin; between csonem are coloured statues of the B.
