aphe whole is adorned with exquisite enamels and cabochons set
1 filigree work ; the cresting and finials are remarkably fine.
f The lesser Relics include: 1, The Shrine of Charle-
s.agne, adorned with rounded arcades supported by coupled co-
‘iimns, ¢. 1166, which was opened in 1843 in presence of the
fouanons, a notary and 2 physicians; the bones of the Emperor
xavere found wrapped up in 2 pieces of stuff, one of Arabian manu-
veture of a violet brown colour adorned with foliage, birds and
‘nimals, the other of a brilliant red colour, 10 ft. by 6 4/2, bear-
g an indcription in Greek which proves it to have been made
‘t Byzantium, probably in the X cent.; a parchment deed of the
« TV. cent. was also found stating that an arm bone had then been
yfitvithdrawn. 2, A case of silver gilt containing the skull of Char-
coemagne. 3, A reliquary of silver, containing an arm bone of
{Yharlemagne, set upright on a hase and adorned with jewels,
fiven by Louis XI of France in 1481. 4,4 pectoral cross of
covLilver gilt with a figure of Christ in half relief, c. 1175; it bears
siphis legend : ECCE CRUCEM DOMINI, FUGITE PARTES ADVERSA, VICIT
pa\B0 DE TRIBU JUDA, RADIX DAVID; and contains a relic of the holy
gross, set in gold with pearls and stones, which was habitually
awowvorn by Charlemagne. 5, A reliquary containing the leathern
‘hirdle of Christ on which may still be seen the impression of
wononstantine’s seal. 6, A reliquary containing the girdle of the
‘B. VY. 7, Areliquary cross, encompassed by a zone or circle
o bf emeralds and jewels, standing on a stem with 2 angels at the
gyase; it contains a piece of the sponge with which the vinegar
viwas given to Christ when on the cross, and a thorn of His crown,
