Pline (1), qui paroît avoir bien connu ie papyrus, ne dit point quil pût croître dans le lit même du Nil, mais bien dans les canaux où le fleuve montoit en fe débordant, & où fes eaux demeuroient ftagnantes & mavoient pas plus de deux coudées de profondeur. Cette obfervation elft tres-exacte; & tout ce que jai vu, tant dans la Haute-Egypte qu'en Abyffinie, la confirme. Jamais le papyrus ne croît dans le lit d'une grande rivière, mais bien dans quelque branche où les eaux s é- panchent, ou fur le bord des lacs, où il n'y a quwenviron une bra{fe d'eau de profondeur, & où il peut être à l'abri du mouvement des vagues » quand le vent les agite avec force. Pline dit encore que le papyrus croit en Syrie, & jy en ai vu en veffet avant daller en Egypte. Il étoit dans le Jourdain, entre Tancienne cité de Paneas, qui porte encore (z) Plin. Nat.
