Le päpyrus que je vis dans le Jourdain' étoit à main gauche du pont appelé le Pont des enfans de Jacob. Il y avoit en cet endroit deux pieds neuf pouces d'eau, & le Jourdain étoit gonflé par les -plutes. Le papyrus croît aufli, fuivant. ce que rapporte Guillandinus (2), au confluent du Figris & de lEupbrate. Jimagine que ce jonc ne fe multt- plia en Afie & en Grêce, que lorfqu'on eut commeneé hen faire du papier & que lufage en devint commun. Cette époque n'eft pas bien certaine. Pline dit que, fuivant Varron, Yufage du papier devint commun dans la Grèce , après qu Älexan- dre eut conquis PEgypte. Cependant on voit (1) Calamus odoratus. (2) Melch- Guillandin.
