Full text | 15 — Anvers devint bientôt la principale et pres- que la seule place commercante du Nord. Plu- sieurs documens de cette époque en parlent comme de la ville la plus riche de l'Europe. Sa population dépassait 200,000 ames ; 500 navi- res entraient journellement dans l’Escaut et plus de deux mille étaient à l'anere devant la ville. On rapporte que Charles-Quint , ayant accepté à diner chez un négociant d'Anvers, nommé Daens, qui lui avait prêté deux millions de flo- rins, celui-cì jeta au feu, après le repas, le billet que Pempereur avait signé, en lui disant : Je suis trop payé par honneur que votre Majesté m'a fait aujourd'hui. La prospérité commerciale avait développé celle de Yindustrie, des arts et des sciences. Les Anversois échangeaient contre les produits de 1’Orient et du Midi, des toiles , des tapisse- ries et des draps qu’ils fabriquaient exclusive- ment, avant qu'Élisabeth ‚ profitant avec habi- leté des troubles des Pays-Bas, eut attiré dans son pays ces hommes industrieux.
