344 Route 41. LEYDEN. Practical Notes.
From the Boulevard and the concert-terrace a Prer ( Wandel--
hoofd Koningin Wilhelmina; Pl. B, 1), 450 yds. in length, built int
1899-1900, stretches into the sea. At its farther end is a concert--
pavilion, with a restaurant (adm., see p. 342).
On the top of the dunes, to the S.W., lie the Pavillon (P1.B, 2),;
a villa belonging to the Prince of Wied, and the theatre of varietiesa
called De Seinpost (closed at present). — Farther on (beyond thes
village) are the Monwment, an obelisk erected in 1865 to com--
memorate the return of William I. after the French occupationt
(p. xlii), and the Lighthouse ( Yuurtoren; no admission).
Between the lighthouse and the drainage-canal from The Hagues
lies the new Fishing Harbour. The cargoes of the numerous fishing-~
boats (pinken; 200 or more) are sold here by auction immediatelyg
on their arrival. The scene on such occasions is often very pictur-+
esque and amusing (comp. p. 46). The herring-fishery is also pro->
secuted with considerable success, many of the ‘pinken’ occasionally
venturing as far as the N. coast of Scotland.
