MALMEDY AND STAVELOT TO LIEGE BY THE VALLEY OF THE AMBLEVE, An agreeable pedestrian tour of 2 or 3 days. ] There are 2 ways of reaching Stavelot from Malmedy, one by siithe high road, 4 1/2 m., passing by a number of fantastic houses, -opmostly belonging to wealthy tanners, which rejoice in such titles 2las Mon Bijou, Mon Repos, Mon Idée, etc.; the other, 6 m., along ufithe 1. bank of the Warge until it joins the Ambléve, which is erossed by a wooden bridge at a spot called de Tiddeul. It was at Aupiive, 6 m. above the junction of the 2 rivers. that Charles Martel defeated Ragenfried, Duke of Neustria, in 716. The way 2 ato Stavelot runs along the rt. bank at the foot of precipitous rocks s aby a path, which is in some places a good many feet above the jwater, at others close to its edge. The first village reached is Hattie, where the Eau Rouge joins the Ambléve; on l. are the lruins of the castle of Stavelot erected in the XV cent., and burnt by the French republicans. | Sraveror. Inn: H.del’Orange. 3,866 Inhabs. This town, giisituated in a valley, 9 m.S. of Spa, owes its origin to am Abbey idfounded in 681 by S. Remacle, Bp. of Tongres, and endowed by iSigehert, King of Austrasia. In the middle ages it became very. belebrated for its schools; its Abbats, who were Princes of the Roman empire and had the right of minting money, held sway ver a territory nearly 60 m. in circumference. In 1688 the town yas burnt by the French. In the beginning of the XVITT cent. he monks pulled down and rebuilt the Abbey with the exception jof the Church; it was suppressed and sold at the French Rev. : ithe Abbey is now a Hospice; of the Church there only remains the jlower part of a fine Romanesque tower. In the Parish Church dis the shrine of S. Remacle, of copper gilt, XII cent. ; at either lend are seated figures of Christ enthroned and the B. V. and iChild, while on the sides heneath Romanesque arches are seated ‘figures of the 12 Apostles, S. Lambert and S. Remacle; on the jopwoof are § medallions repr. scenes from the New Testament; the ‘whole is adorned with precious stones, enamels and filigree work. orotHere are also a reliquary bust of S: Poppo of silver gilt, a immitre, an abbatial staff, 6 chasubles, copes, dalma- gofties and tunics of XVcent.
