From Brussels nevertheless there is really but little to be seen; the Chateau of Hougoumont, itself rebuilt, has quite lost its identity owing to - the new buildings that have crept up all round; the ridge of Mont- S. Jean has been considerably reduced in height, the spot where the Duke of Wellington stood quite cut away, and the ground generally along the front of the British position lowered by the removal of the earth employed in forming the mound; the wood of Quatre-Bras has also disappeared. Those persons who deter- mine notwithstanding to visit the battlefield, and wish to obtain a clear and concise description of the battle, should purchase, «The Voice from Waterloo », by the late Serjt. Cotton, which may be obtained at his Museum. About 2 m. from this Stat. onl., at the side of the high road to Wavre, is the Chapel of N. Dame au Bois, erected in 4650; it consists of a nave and chancel in renaissance style, and contains 4 stained glass windows presented by the Abbats of Parcq in 1688, and a number of paintings repr. scenes of the Passion and miracles wrought here through the intercession of the B. Virgin. 5 kil. La Hutpe. In the churchyard of this village, renowned for the beauty and variety of its landscapes, is a tomb-stone bear- ing an inscription to the memory of Sir C. Bailly, secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, d. 1624. At Ysscuz, 2 1/2 m. on l, may still be seen the house of Justus Lipsius; in the village is a stone pedestal surmounted by his bust in bronze by Marchant, set up in 1833; the sides of the pedestal are adorned with 2 bas-reliefs repr. him in his study, and giving a lecture in presence of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. The Parish Church has a mas- sive and lofty Tower of the XII cent.; its nave, trans. and choir were built 1490-1820, the aisles, 1719. 4 lol. Rixensarr. 5 kil. Ortienizs. There are branch-lines from here to Louvain, Nivelles and Mons, see Rte. 34, p. 355; and to Villers and Charleroy , see Rte. 36, p. 361. 8 kil. MonrS. Guiperr. About 1/2 a mile from here on rt. isa Chateau belonging to M. de Man de Lennick; attached to it are a fine park, botanical gardens and hot-houses containing @ valuable collection of plants ; strangers are admitted to view them at all times. ; 4 kil. Caastre. The line leaves Brabant and enters the Prov- ince of Namur. 5 kil. Gempcoux. A very ancient village mentioned in the Itin- erary of Antoninus and the table of Theodosius under the name of Geminiacum. It was a military station on the road from Bavay to Tongres.
