From Brussels | 2 FLOREFFE. 3m. from-here, on the road to Mons, isa fine old castle built hyd. the Dukes of Brancas. After quitting the Stat. the line leaves the coal-basin of Charts leroy, and, descending the beautiful and fertile valley of thedi Sambre, passes by the immense establishment of the Societé anopa nyme de Couillet, celebrated for its hand made nails; this brancllo: of industry is extensively carried on in the neighbourhood anga employs about 7,000 hands. 7 kil. CHATELINEAU. Here are large iron-works; immediatelyls opposite on the other side of the Sambre is CuatTELer, a towlw of 8,522 Inhabs., where are numerous potteries and manufactopi ries of nails. The branch line to Morialmé and Walcourt turns off here; seeg¢ Rte. 39. 3 kil. Farciennes. The line is carried along an embankmentin and then crosses the Sambre on a bridge of 3 “arches ; after run-a ning over 2 viaducts, it passes from the province of Hainault intatc that of Namur, and enters along cutting, on emerging from whichis. the remains of the Monastery of Oignies, once so celebrateds: for its smithery and jewellery, may be seen on rt.; they nowr serve as the workshops of a plate-glass manufactory, ‘the first ofo the kind est&blished in Belgium. After again crossing the Sambre; 911 the line reaches 5 kil. Tamines. The line again crosses the Sambre. 2 kil. Aoverats. After again crossing the Sambre twice, theyrl line enters a deep cutting, the view on\ emerging from which isi very fine. 6 kil. Moustier-Les-Dames. Here was formerly a Priory ato Canonesses founded at the end of the VII cent. in honor of S. Peter. i After again crossing the Sambre the line reaches 5 kil. Frorerre. A village picturesquely seated on a hill on thief it. bank of the Sambre; it was formerly a fortified town and hasas sustained several sieges. At the summit of the hill, on the sitesi originally occupied by a castle of the Counts of Namur, is a Pre-+s monstratensian Abbey founded in 1420 by Count Godfrey. Thesr Church, erected in 1165 was rebuilt in 1188 and again in 177001 from the designs of Dewez. The Abbey, 1188-1250, now serves#e as the little Seminary of the Diocese of Namur; the Cloistersa: and Hall of the Counts are well worth visiting; the latter isei a long vaulted room, 114 ft. 9 in. by 39 ft. 4 in., divided intooi 2 aisles by § Romanesque pillars; the windows have been bricked bs up; its walls still retain considerable traces of paintings in distem-+p per executed by order of Sir Walter d’Obais, 14th Abbat, 1265-80. 10 The view from here is fine, commanding the whole valley of Flo-~« veffe; on one side is seen Fiorirroux and its fine chateau, and on a |
