Full text | to Namur. NAMUR. Route 33. 351 nidblacum. In 933 S. Guibert founded a Benedictine Abbey here dwwhich became a celebrated seat of learning. It was rebuilt by ‘s Dewez, 1762-73. In the neighbourhood were fought 2 battles, 4 in véf45878 when Don John of Austria defeated the army of the States |General; the other in1794 when the Austrians were beaten by the French. 8 kil. S. This town, the capital of the province, seated on the confluence j tc of the Meuse and the Sambre, between 2 monntains, owes its ori- iz gin to a castle constructed towards the end of the VJ cent. It is ‘frequently mentioned in deeds of the VII cent. under the name of wwViNamucum. After the Norman invasion it became the residence ; ieof the Counts of Namur. The town, which originally included me only that part which lies between the Sambre and the Meuse, was enlarged in the XI and again in the XI{ and XIV cent. Having received a charter of enfranchisement in 1213, it quickly rose to prosperity. In 1692 it was besieged and taken by Louis XIV, but siretaken by the Allies under William III, 4 Aug. 1695, after a agie siege of 10 weeks. The treaty of Utrecht adjudged it to Austria fiin 1718 when it was ‘confided to the care of the Dutch. The 1% French again took it in 4746, but restored it to Austria in 1748 g atthe peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. In 1792 the French republicans a seized it, were driven out the following year, seized it again in 1h 41794, and retained possession of it till 1814. ; The Carneprat, ded. to S. Alban of Mayence, consecrated in {1208 by Cardinal Langton, Archbishop of Canterbury, but since grebuilt, is a handsome modern edifice of brick and blue stone, og erected 1751-72 from the designs of Pizzoni, a Milanese architect. iIt is the only modern cathedral in Belgium : its plan is a latin {9 Gross 256 ft. long by 56 ft. broad at the choir, 174 ft. at the trans., pDasand 115 ft. atthe nave. It is crowned at the intersection of the 919 cross hy a dome, supported by 8 Corinthian columns, and adorned dicw with pilasters of the same order and 4 figures carved in relief of rip@ Faith, Hope, Charity and Religion. The W. front is adorned mi with Corinthian and Composite columns and with white marble sista Statues of Christ, the 4 Evangelists, Moses, David and Religion. ofT The Tower, placed at the E. end of the choir, dates from 1648, ow with the exception of the lower stage which is a fragment of that o19 erected by Albert, Count of Namur, in 4047.
