Institue for Scientific Information. INDEX TO SCIENTIFIC REVIEWS (ISR). I.S.I., 325
Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19106. 1975 - $250 per year. A year’s sub-
scription includes a soft-bound semiannual issue and a hardbound, two-volume annual
cumulation. Issues covering the first half of the year are available in September ; annual
issues are available the following April.
The ISR assists users in retrieving review articles published throughout the world on
any subject in science. Each year ISR expects to index over 16,000 review articles
appearing in nearly 2,400 important journals. Quarterly and annual review publications will
also be covered.
Over 100 disciplines represented by the following general areas of science are covered :
Agricultural, biological and environmental sciences ; Engineering and technology ; Medical
and Iife sciences ; Physical and Chemical sciences ; Social and behavioral sciences.
Four basic types of searches can be performed. However best results are achieved when
a combination of several types of searching is employed.
1. Citation search : best used when an earlier key author, paper, book or other published
material relevant to the search subject is known ;
2. Permuterm search : best used to start a search when no earlier relevant paper or
authors on a subject are known. Typical situations would be background searches for
a researcher entering a new field or a graduate student starting a new project.
3. Author search : best used when the name of an author of a review article is known,
but no further information as to what publication the review article appeared in is known.
Also useful when a known author periodically writes reviews in a field of interest to the
searcher.
4. Organization search : best used when an organization is known that is deeply involved
in the type of work that is the subject of the search. H. de J.
