' This town, seated on the 1. hank of the Rhine, is of Roman ciaftigin, and is mentioned by Tacitus, under the name of Castra stonnensia, as the place where the Romans defeated the rebel hmader of the Batavi, Claudius Civilis, A. D. 70. It was formerly vf ne residence of the Electors of Cologne, who removed their court gilfither from Cologne in 1268. In 1854 Gebhard Truchsess, who fad been deposed from the see of Cologne for heresy, took refuge sieere, hut after a long siege was compelled to capitulate to Abp. -aitirnest of Bavaria, his successor. In 1703 great part of the town syvas burnt during the siege by the allied army of Eng. and Dutch rapamder Marlborough. fof Bonn is now chiefly remarkable for its University, founded (i wy the King of Prussia in 1818 ; amongst those who have been omrofessors here the most distinguished are Niebuhr and A. W. idoschlegel, both dead. Prince Albert was a student here. (| The Electoral Palace, 350 yds. long, erected in 1730, now gerves to contain the University; in addition to the usual Lecture- orooms, there are a Library of about 150,000 vols.;a Museum, gopontaining a fine collection of antiquities found here and in the ‘igfaeighbourhood, amongst which is an altar ‘dedicated to Victory dvwhich formerly stood on the Romer-Platz; and the Academical {{gBHall, decorated with frescoes by Cornelius and his pupils; the jjdimsubjets are Jurisprudence, Medicine, Philosophy and Theology. sfiThe hall may be seen on application to the Universitats-Pedell ; ea'fee, 5 ser.
