On they bank of the Rhine are 2 towers which defend the whole extent @ the quay; that at the upper end called Beyenthurm is an octdewi gonal mass of imposing elevation, beautifully built of tuf- stone) Bi and surmounted with a fine embattlement in 1262: that at they. lower end, called the Thirmchen or small tower, was an accés sory work of the fortress of Ryle: the distance between these towers along the bank of the Rhine is about 2 1/2 Eng. m., andi on the land-side round the wall about 4 3/4 Eng. m. On they land-side there are 12 gates, between which and the towers alls either extremity is a high rampart with a deep fosse outsid@)|3! the wall is flanked by 50 picturesque semicircular towers calledhy Wichhauser. The lower part of the wall and towers is compostlb:) of large blocks of basalt, on the interior it is strengthened byjt buttresses and arcades. The wall and towers were originally emit: battled, but great alterations have been made both in 1474, during ra the war between Abp. Robert and Charles the Bold of Burgundy yy! and in modern times by the Prussian Govt. The gates almosirc all consist of 3 towers differently grouped, e. g. that of S.. Severil is formed by an octagonal tower flanked tee 3 smaller cylindriall KD towers, that of S. Pantaleon by 3 square towers. |
