stantine the Great. It is connected with Cologne by a bridge ja:
of boats, nearly 1,400 ft. long, constructed in 1822; to allow jw
vessels to pass, this bridge has to he opened, a process by which |i
passengers are often delayed 10 or 15 minutes; it is removed im |i
winter. A new tubular bridge, supported by massive stone
piers sunk in the bed of the river, is in course of construction,
Abp. Conrad de Hochstaden surrounded the town with walls |
flanked by towers; these fortifications, several times destruyed jh
and rebuilt, were razed by the Austrians in 1673; since 1816 the [4
town has been again fortified as atéte de pont. ;
In 4001 S. Heribert founded an Abbey of Benedictines here ; ifs [2
site is now occupied by large barracks and artillery workshops) |
The Church, almost entirely rebuilt in the XIII cent., is ad}
aisled building with an apsidal chancel and a clerestory, but no)
triforium; it contains several highly interesting objects; these are}
1, The Chasuble of S. Heribert, Abp. of Cologne, d. 1022, of the |.
primitive form without any openings at the side; it is made of a}
heavy gold coloured oriental silk stuff, perfectly plain, and im jis
excellent preservation; 2, An ivory staff, (cwrvatura,) carved |b
with the Crucifixion and a repr. of our Lord in glory; the trans
versal piece terminates at either end in a serpent’s head; on the
silver mounting are engraved the angel informing the 3 Marys of
the Resurrection of onr Lord, the angel announcing His coming
to the souls in Limbo, and the Descent of Christ into Limbo ; it)
contains relics of the B. V. and S. Christopher; 3, A small oblong?
Byzantine reliquary of copper gilt, XII cent.; 4, A drinking cup!
of S. Herihert’s, made of cocoa with a silver border of XIL cent.
workmanship, converted into a pyx 3 the foot and cover, of silvers
parcel gilt, are of XV cent.; 5, An Abbatial staff of coppe
gilt with statuettes of the B. V. and S. Ursula in the crook, an
6 saints of silver gilt in niches round the knop, c. 1480; 6, The
Sarinz of S. Heribert, a splendid work of art of the latter half”
of the XII cent., 5 ft. long by 2 ft. 2 im. high and 4 ft. 4 in
broad; at the ends are the B. V. and Child with 2 angels, an
S. Heribert between 2 deacons with a majesty above; the side
are occupied by 12 seated figures in high relief of the Apostle
holding scrolls on which are inscribed the articles of the creed
between these are full length figures of Moses, David and the?
12 Prophets in Cologne enamel, each 9 in. high ; on the roof are
49 large medallions repr. 18 scenes from the life of S. Heribert™
in enamel, and 48 small medallions containing demifigures of 7
Saints in low relief; the intervening spaces are occupied by)
exquisite enamels, ornaments cast in low relief, and cabochons’ i
set in filigree work ; the cresting is adorned with crystals. Other
