The walls, pillars and vaulting are being polychromatised }
M. Welter ina manner highly creditable to that gentleman; thé
windows of the apse and N. chapel are filled with very fine early
Stained glass, the design of which is quite of a Byzantine cha
acter while the colours are of most slowing hues : the centra
window of the apse repr. the genealogy of the B. V. and the pri
cipal events in the life of Christ with figures of the Prophets ; the
side-windows scenes from the lives of S. Clement and S. Cunia
bert; those in the N. Chap., the B. V., S. Cecily and S. Catherine;
carefully restored in 1839. Behind the high altar are the tomb}
of S. Cunibert, and the shrines of SS. Ewald, 2-brothers martyred
at Dortmund, c. 700; these shrines of wood are adorned with
paintings of the XV cent. repr. SS. Ursula and Gereon with thei
companions ; these haye been restored. On the S. side of the
Choir is a Tabernacle, latter half of XIV cent., over its door ig)
repr. Christ seated in judgement between 2 kneeling figures, : ay
the sides of the tabernacle are painted S. Cunihbert, S. Boniface?,
a priest with the B. Sacrament and another with a taper; beneath,
10 angels with musical instruments. Close to this are an iron branch)
and a stanchion for an altar bell of XV cent. On the N. side i
an aumbrye containing some reliquaries of XV cent. with paint:
ings on the wall beneath of the Crucifixion, the B. V., S. John
and 4 others. Against the pillars are 2 fine statues of the B. V. :
and-S. Gabriel on carved brackets, 1433: Here is also a richly
carved wooden lectern, XV cent. The pillars of the Nave and
the walls of the side Chapels are adorned with paintings in dis- 7
temper of SS. Cunibert, Clement, Ewald, etc., XII cent. At thée™
W. end of the Nave is a fine standard 5 branched ¢ andlestick
of brass; its hexagonal base is adorned with 3 figures of lions;
attached to the stem is a figure of Christ crucified, c. 1440.
