Stephan. 3 : <if/Mr. Becker of Deutz has a Pectoral Gross and a Tr. of XV . dint.; the centre is occupied by a repr. of the Passion, the side- igenels, divided into 12 compartments, repr. scenes from the life 9) Christ. : s(1The gardens at the river side here are a favourite place of io-sort in the summer eyenings; the view from them of Cologne ith its numerous churches is very fine. (7 The village Church of Nieves is a cruciform building erected 1880 from the designs of M. Statz; it has an apsidal chancel ‘olorned with mural paintings. In the N. Trans. is a mural 2s cass repr. the B. V., S. Peter, S. Henry and a Canon, G. 1530. (TThe Cistercian Abbey of Atrenserc, 14 m. from Cologne, » Bid about 4 4/4 m. off the high road to Lennep, is well worth siting. The best way is to take the Schnellpost or a carriage Strasserhof, where a pathway, very muddy in wet weather, nayns off from the road, leading through a glen to the Abbey, hoifated in the pretty valley of the Dhin, close to its bank. It 5a Baisled cruciform building, 260 ft. long by 100 ft. broad at one trans. and 72 at the nave, and 84 ft. high, erected 1255-1379 ii yy the Counts of Berg, who are said to have employed the archi-~ ‘sect of Cologne Cathedral; it would however appear with greater dosrobability to be the production of an inferior mind enyious of jhe rising glories of that Cathedral, and vainly ambitious to com— -yivess the majesty of that gigantic pile into a church of half its (ijzdaength : the moldings are meagre, and the several parts have all 4fhe appearance of properly belonging to a larger building. Asis 5 athe case with many of the Cistercian churches, it has no towers hand is extremely simple in its decorations. The windows, admi- iffably designed, contain some beautiful erisaille glass of the /TSLV cent., and some fine stained glass of the XVI cent.; remains 4 bf paintings in distemper may be traced on the walls.
