2S. Gereon’s, founded in the IV cent., is one of the most
v9 teresting Churches in Cologne. Its plan is singular and emi-
imently German; the body of the Church, preceded by a large por-
930, presents a vast decagonal shell measuring 66, ft. by 85, the
s{llars of whose internal angles are prolonged in ribs which,
antering ina summit, meet in one point and form a cupola, one
(fi * the latest examples known; the ribs and the key-stone, carved
. the form of a pomegranate, are gilt, the intervening spaces,
jieepyrnices, capitals and columns being polychromatised. A high
had wide flight of steps, rising opposite to the entrance, leads to ‘
ssa altar with an oblong choir behind it from whence other steps '
‘gain ascend to the sanctuary, a semicircular apse, flanked by 2
igh square towers and belted, as is also the cupola, by an open
(iallery with small arches and pillars resting on a panelled halus-
opeade. The upper portion of the church, including the whole of
aye choir and the extensive 3 aisled cruciform crypt beneath, was
lipuilt 1066-9; the decagonal portion and the baptistery 1212-27 ;
sie sacristy with its turret in 1316 ; some slight alterations obser-
oidrable in the upper portion of the church were made after a yio-
- jfent storm in 1434. The doorway with square lintel, low pedi-
rmgenent and pointed arch is elegant; on the tympanum are painted
zeuPihrist surrounded by Saints and angels, the Resurrection and
ajast Judgement, c. 1230. The Baptistery, on S. of decagonal por-
«aion, the walls of which are painted in distemper with figures of
.3. Stephen and S. Laurence, c. 1230, contains a font of por-
hhyry, said to have been given by Charlemagne; close to its en-
parance are some iron candlestands used at funerals, XV cent. On
fitber side of the principal altar are paintings of the Crucifixion and

wen, lower down the Rhine. On the 5. side of the upper choir is
“3 dam aumbrye with a painting of the Annunciation, XVI cent. In
ofthe Crypt are the tomb of S. Gereon, and some remains of mural
gqpaintings and of a handsome mosaic pavement. The door of
