438 Route 46. COLOGNE. From Aix-la-Chap.
maintained that the greater portion of it was erected in the VII uu
cent. but it is more probable that only the crypt is of that date: pa.
The choir and trans., which do not appear older than the XII cent, |i
have a broad aisle running round each; on the exterior, immedi= ei
ately beneath the cornice, is an open gallery of arches resting om ia
small pillars. The effigy of Plectrudis in low relief, an intes bs
resting work of X cent., is let-into the wall beneath the E. wine er
dow; the flying buttresses also deserve notice. The lower win
dows of both choir and trans. have been filled with flamboyant fi
tracery. The 2 chapels with groined vaulting and E. bow windows ff
on either side of the choir were erected in the latter half of XW |v
cent.; that on the S. has a turret and spire. The lower portion off io
the nave is of the X cent., but its vaulting apparently belongs fo 0)
the end of XIV cent. The old W. tower fell down in 1637 andi {p
has been partly rebuilt; the turrets are anct. The Convent n0
longer exists, but there is a large cloister of XI cent., at W. en
of church, which was restored a few years ago: the capitals
the pillars of the arcading are finely sculptured with foliag
birds and animals. Crypt: The walls are covered with anc
paintings in distemper now nearly effaced. Choir : Parclose
