Gene- fal de Hochkirchen, whose tomb, formerly in the Franciscan {hurch, was carved in.1701 by J. Fortini; and that-of Abp. Adol- ‘hus de Schavanenbourg, d. 1566. | Chapel of S. Michael: The stain ed glass, repr. 8. Ursula Hend S. Clement, is by P. Grass, 1852. The carved reredos of ; aphe altar, 9 ft. wide hy 8 ft. high, formerly adorned the church of glinvulpich; it is divided into 12 compartments repr. the principal vyvents in the life of our Lord. Chapel of S. Agnes: Of the stained glass the figures of S. Anne and §. Severin are ancient; those of SS. Cumibert, Agnes, siazereon and Maurice are by P. Grass. Over the altar is the isigeelebrated Doneirp, a painting in distemper by S. Lothener, c» 1440, repr. in ceutre the Adoration of the Magi, on side-panels, Ai3S. Ursula and Gereon with their companions, and on reverse, ofthe Annunciation; it isa masterly production. In the centre of othe chapel is the tomb of S. Irmegarde, Countess of Ziitphen, PL 1.4100. Ms Chapel of he Magi, constructed of marble in very had. style: eranere is the celebrated Surine of the Magi, or 3 kings of Cologne, as yoibhey are more'popularly called: Their bodies were brought away rom S- Eustorgio at Milan by the Eimpr. Frederic Barbarossa ‘After the taking of that city, and were presented by him to Abp. nisfaainaldo, who deposited them in the anct. cathedral, 23 July \01M64; they were removed into the present chapel in 1337 and re- amained exposed there without further protection than a low screen jiof wrought iron until 1685 when the alterations were made : it is fnow. only exposed to public gaze on Sun. and. festivals. The (shrine, 5 1/2{t.long by 4.4/2 high and 3, broad, dates from 1164- ££ 4920; it is composed of plates of silver parcel gilt, curiously Awrought and richly adorned with statuettes, filigree work, enamels, ‘precious stones, pearls, intaglios, cameos and other polished stones Jto the number of 1540, amongst which are 260 antiques. In 1794 fit was transported for safety to Frankfort.on the Main, and was pgnot brought back here until 4 Jan. 4804; many of the jewels were fioesold to maintain the persons who accompanied it, and others were sfatastolen in 1820; these have been replaced by imitations in paste or usleglass ; the value of the shrine as it now stands is said to be above . 200,000. The sides are adorned with arcades occupied by ficures of the Apostles and Prophets; at one end are the Scourging ‘Aand Crucifixion with statuettes of Jeremiah and Abp. Rainaldo ; odfaboye these Christ with SS. Felix and Nabor; at the other end are , o/Athe B. V. and Child, the 3 Magi-with the Empr.
