Full text | 426 Route 46. COLOGNE. From Aiaz-la-Chap. 450,000 Inhabs. and could furnish 30,000 fighting men in time of war. The destruction of 17,000 looms and the expulsion of the weavers for a mutiny in the XIII cent. , the banishment of the Jews in 1349, and the refusal to allow Protestants to enjoy the rights of citizenship in 1685, did great injury to the town, the number of whose inhabs. was reduced in 1790 to 42,000 of whom nearly one third were paupers. The principal cause of its decay, however, was the closing of the navigation of the Rhine by the Dutch in the XVI cent., which restriction was not removed until 1837. Conrad of Hochstaden; the works were for some years™ pushed on with great activity under the direction of Master Gerard | \ Vou Rile, a builder of whom uothing more is known than that he died before 130%; the apsidal chapels and lower part of the choi upto the roof of its procession aisles were constructed 1248-c. 42705) the remainder of the choir was completed before 27 Sept. 13927 when it was consecrated. In 41347 the W. endofthe anct. church} was pulled down and the new nave and W. front commenced; 7) the original designs, o. 1345, of this portion of the Cathed=" ral qweve discovered in the granary of an hotel at Darmstadt i” 4814. In 1357 the works were discontinued for a long time, and™ it was not until 1437 that the S. W. tower was sufficiently ad=7 vanced to receive the hells; since then the crane placed on its top, at the height of 189 ft. above the ground, has remained” unused. Of the N. tower only the foundatious and basement to the height of 27 ft. were constructed. In the commencement of the XVI cent. 4 bays of the N. aisle, the pillars of the nave, and |
