Full text | 430 Route 46. COLOGNE. From Aiz-la-Chap. yast proportion of nave height; the spires too are constructed | open-work, contrary to the true principles of architecture, the finials at their summit, as drawn in the design, are not mer ridiculous but impossible, that is, they could not be construc on any true principles or with reasonable safety. In the design of the trans., entirely the composition of Mr. Zumeb ner, (the original plans not haying been found, ). that. gentleman has always inclined to the worst style of the anct. details, ami has collected from the elevation all its worst features. The labels and finials introduced by him over each arch of the naye arc o piece with the rest of his works, which, however well built, a caricature of the spirit of the old work. The alteration he ha made in the 2 lower stages of the N. W. tower are also very queser tionable, as although that tower gains in appearance it loses Ml stability, the staircase having been contrived in the thicknes ai é the wall. The proposed iron roof to the nave is an abominationh only surpassed by the proposed central tower of the same materiaht an innovation which, if proyed to be necessary, ought to be treai ina manmer entirely conformable with the nature of metal work 2 it should be light, rich and fanciful, —and Mr. Zwirner, who li in all his works shown himself to be wholly unimbued with th spirit of the ancient work, is certainly not the man to be trus with such an important work as a metallic spire which, if a fae lure, will prove a disgrace to its inventors and an eyesore to the building. Other things might be named, but enough has heen said show that the cathedral of Cologne is not the queen of pointes architecture although it covers 10,644 square yards while itsii tivals only attain, Amiens to 9,868; Ulm to 8,033; Rheims 7,953; Bourges 7,415; and Paris to 6,378. The dimensions of the Cathedral are extreme length from E. to}, W., 466 P. ft.; width at trans. 274 P. ft.; width at nave, 175 B ft.; width of each tower, 1 P. ft. 6 in.; height of W. front, 19 P. ft.; intended height of the W. towers, 476 P. ft. Nave and Aisles : The 8 windows of the N.
