Full text | 36% Route 36. VILLERS. From. Louvain 2 vound openings; the doorway beneath led to the Lazaretto of Robermont and the Chapel of S. Bernard; another door in the W. aisle of this trans. opens into a small room where was formerly a handsome fountain of black marble; in the W. angle isa stair- case leading up to above the vaulting. The S. wall is pierced by 1° a 3 light window which differs from that in the N. wallin that 7) the side lights are pointed and that there.is no hood-mould; the © door heneath leads to the sacristy, and the staircase in the angle to the dormitories and the vault of the S. aisle. The Nave is” divided into 14 hays supported by cylindrical columns with octa-~ gonal capitals, only a small portion of the vaulting remains. At™ the W. end isa fine portal, the wall of which is pierced by 3 Ro-7 manesque doorways : the Towers which flank it were never raised higher than the vault of the nave. Exteriorly the church is sup- | ported by flying buttresses of the same pattern all round; the cross placed on the summit of the W. gable of the nave, 3 May 1967, was of iron covered with plates of silver, and that-on the™ top of the Sanctus turret, 15 July 1273, of brass gilt; both contained” relics. Of the numerous works of art that once adorned this) 2 church a carved reredos, now in the Parish Church, is all that). remains; it represents the principal events in the life of our Lord. 4 Two Dukes of Brabant were buried here, Henry HW in 1248 and” John lI in 1385. The Brewery, originally, it is said, the lay brothers’ refectory and dormitory, constructed c. 1197, measures 131 ft.
