(A branch-line from here runs eastward up adithe valley of the Yve to Froiomont where it bifurcates, one road rogcontinuing to ascend the valley of the Yve to S. Ausin and FLo- |RENNES, a small town which belonged anciently to the Counts of Hainault, one of whom sold it at the end of the XI cent. to Othert, (Bp. of Liege, who already possessed the Benedictine Abbey of 4S. Aubin founded in 1012 by Arnold, Lord of Florennes. In 1429 aflithe town was sacked in the war between the Liegeois and Philip “VAsseuré, Duke of Burgundy, and in 1534 by the troops of Henry If icof France. It was dismantled in 1702; here is a fine Castle dhelonging to the Duke of Beaufort. Beyond Florennes is FEnat, déthe Church of which, a 3 aisled building, is in the 1st pointed igstyle with the exception of a Romanesque doorway now llocked .g@up. In the wall N. of the high altar is a tabernacle with an iron oof door of the XIII cent. The baptistery, in 2nd pointed style, is :9ig pierced by an elegant rose window beneath which is an aumbrye (Oifor the holy oils; the font of calcareous stone is Romanesque ; fit consists of a circular basin with a swell at the base, and is sup- sported by 4 lions one of which holds a book anda young child; on he basin are bas-reliefs repr. the Baptism of Christ whose gar- “ments are held by 2 angels; there are 2 other groups of figures jiiivewhich are inexplicable, while on the swell are repr. 2 men swim- siseming, symbolical of the R. Jordan, and 2 dragons one of which is carrying off a child; height, 3 ft. 3 in.; diameter, 2 ft. 7 1/2 in.; suifdiameter of basin, 1 ft. 41 1/4in.: here is also.a mural monument Hof a knight and lady kneeling before a crucifix, 1583. | The other section of the branch line runs up the valley of the Ri des Gades to Jamacne and Paitippey ILLE, a town of 1405 Inhabs. j Aeated on a eminence, founded by Charles V in 1585 near a vil- onlage called Corbigny, which he named after his son; here was a coffortress of the 3rd class recently demolished. In the Church is fa fine Chalice. In the neighbourhood are 2 guarries of marbles. @Between Neuville and Villers-deux-Eglises, in the valley of Fré- iggivau, a Gaulo-Roman cemetery was discovered in 1852; upwards oy tof 70 vases, 50 fibulee and a large number of medals and coins, p¥varying in date from the reign of Augustus to that of Antoninus €Pius, were found in 24 tombs. | The main line continues to : 'e 3 kil.
