From Namur Ascension, beneath these the 4 Evangelists and 4 Doctors of thejil Church, and on either side of each, beneath arcades supported byga Corinthian columns, statuettes of the 12 Apostles; it is surmouneii ted by a roof, the top of which sustains a sarcophagus adornedbs: with a recumbent figure of S. Begga: the frieze beneath the corto nice is ornamented with lion’s heads, arabesques and grotesquépsy figures, c. 1600: also a silver bust of S. Begga supported by ab six sided base the faces of which are adorned with preciousin stones; the head, which is veiled, has a jewelled crown; the whole is 2 ft. high and is supported by 4 small lions, c. 1590. ; On the market-place is a fountain surmounted by a figure of ag bear with this legend : ‘ Charles Martel, de Pepin second fils naturel ‘ En Van sept cent peu plus me mist icy & mort cruel. / Formerly, there was a stone ‘bridge over the Meuse here, some remains of which may still be seen. It was destroyed in 1183 by the Liegeois after a great victory gained by them over Henryk the Blind, Count of Namur: the actual bridge of stone and ironic is of quite recent construction. Andennes has become of late yearse the centre of a district in which are many potteries and several large paper-manufactories : much pipe -lay is also exported hencebo to Holland. | It was here that the disastrous war known as the War of thes: Cow broke out. : : In 1273 a tournament was held here by Count Guy de Damesn pierre, to which princes and barons flocked in great numbers : as a2 consequence the lower classes were also attracted hither, some by curiosity, others to sell provisions; amongst the latterits was a peasant from the village of Jallet, who brought with hint a cow which he had stolen from one Rigaud de Corbion, a burgheris ol Ciney, who recognized his beast and denounced the thief too!
