From that time the town has shared the fortunes of its episcopal rulers against whom however its citizens often took up arms in defencege of their liberties, of which they were very tenacious. The possess sion of its castle being considered of great importance, it was oftenp taken and retaken during the middle ages. In 1398 the Dutch took it by stratagem, but were quickly expelled by the Spaniard whom the Bp. of Liege called to his assistance. The French seizedhs it in 1675, but it. was restored to the Bp. by the treaty of Nimes guen in 1678. The French took it by storm in 1693, the Spaniard recovered it in 1694; it was again restored to the Bp. by thes Peace of Ryswick. In 1702 it was occupied by the French, from Whom Marlborough took it in 1703; the French retook it in Jungs; 1705, but were compelled to evacuate it the next month; it wag then classed among the towns of the Barrier and occupied by they: Dutch till 1718, when they dismantled and quitted it in confor mity with the terms of the treaty concluded at Antwerp in 1716,4.0 The citadel was built in 1817 on the rock formerly occupied by yy the old castle, under the direction of Eng. engineers.
