Full text | 370 Route 40. BOUGE. From Namur 3 kil. Gerpiswes. The line enters the valley of Hanzinne or Acoz which it descends. 3 kil. Acoz. The scenery is very picturesque. 3 kil. ‘ Bourriourx. 4 kil. CGaargrivrav. Here the line joins that from Charleroy to Namur; see Rte. 32, p. 348. ROUTE 40. NAMUR TO HUY AND LIEGE. Namur to Huy 30 1/4 kil. = 18 3/4 Eng. m. Huy to Liege 31 1/4 Kil. = 19 3/8 Eng. m. A STEAMER plies on the Meuse, when there is water enough, between Namur and Liege, starting from the Porte de Grayere at 3 p. m. daily, arri- ving at Huy at 4.45 p. m. and at Liege at 7 p.m.; fares, to Huy 85 c. 5 to Liege, 11/2 fr. The distance is 46 miles. The Railroad, opened in 1850, belongs to an Eng. company ; the engineer is Mr G. Rennie... The Hagia farm-house, which the conqueror of Lepanto chose for his habi- = i tation, and the room where he so prematurely closed his glorious 7 career, 1 Oct. 1578, are still shown. After passing the Hermitage . of S: Hubert, the Rly. approaches the 1. bank of the Meuse, close 9 to which it runs during the remainder of the journey. It is not] | within our province to describe the beauties of the valley which’) ~ we now enter, and which is followed by others equally lovely, in] | a rapid succession ; all we pretend to do is to mention the localities” nt which the line passes by and the historical traditions connected therewith. (The vt. and Z. refer to the vight and left banks of 7 the river, not of the Rly.). While traversing the first valley, the ~ i heights of Erpent are seen on the rt., and lower down, a hill overhanging the gloomy Trou des Larrons, once a much dreaded den of robbers; on the hills may be perceived the red ~ stains of the earth which produces alum, employed in numerous” |
