This town, seated on the R. ‘coseSambre, was in the IX cent. a little village, given in 888 by Arnold PKing of Lotharingia to the Cathedral of Liege. In 972 it was for- fiftified hy Bp. Notger. In 1794 it was seized by the French. It is pivifdivided into the upper and lower town, the former being built on a ritollofty rock. Ls 2 kil. Losers. Here are the ruins of a magnificent Abbey, joOfounded in the VIL cent. by S. Landelin, which, by the donations 2 (presented to it by Clovis I, King of the Franks, became one of the giipfrichest in Belgium; it was reduced to its present condition by the yorFrench in 1794. The Abbey Church, consecrated by S. Ursmar in 796697, was several times rebuilt. The Parish Church, ded. toS. Urs- A jcemar ,i8 avery interesting Romanesque building erected i in 1046, with oflithe except tion of the tower, 1076-95, and the Chapels of S.
