Full text | 372 Route 40. NAMECHE, From Namur The Parish Church, ded. to.'S. Maternus, was in great part rebuilt in 1730, but.the Nave is Romanesque. In a niche in the wall of the 5. Trans. is the tomb of a lady castellan of Samson, in the costume of the end of the XII cent., with a crown on her head above which is a canopy ; it is supposed to represent Sibylla de Lusignan, sister of Baldwin IV, who in 14174 succeeded her father Amaury on the throne of Jerusalem, of which her son Baldwin V was the last king. On the southern slope of a hill, = the foot of which is watered by the Meuse, are extensive quarries © which yield an excellent calcareous stone much used in building. Above Naméche, ré., is seen the Chatean of Moisnil, sur- rounded by plantations of fir trees. Lower down are the gigantic rocks of Samson on the top of which are remains of the old castle erected in the X cent., an impregnable fortress which could only be reached by a narrow path up the steep bank now adorned by terraced gardens. It was dismantled in 1691 by order of Charles Il. The rocks on the rt. bank of the river in several places display dark excavations called by the natives crayats des Nutons. The Nutons in Walloon legends are little, black, hairy sprites of a benevolent disposition, in whose existence the miners in this neighbourhood still believe; consequently there is scarcely a- village but has its Nuton’s cave. 3 4/4 kil. Scraieyzaux : 2., a small hamlet depending on the village of Vézin. : On the opp. bank is Scuayn, with a Church ded. to the B. V. and S. Felix, founded in 1106 by the Empr. Henry V; it isa 3 aisled cruciform building, the choir of which extends 2 fifths of the way down the nave, and is separated by a solid wall, 8. ft. high, from the transepts and aisles; the choir alone has.an apsi- dal termination the buttresses of which are united by arches of construction; the roof is of wood and flat : the upper stage of W. Tower, the S. Aisle and 8 of the windows were reconstructed in 1723, the remainder of the church is pure Romanesque; its walls are covered with grey cement. The Choir contains some anct. carved stalls. In the Nave and Trans. are 3 fine mural monts. of black marble : 1, Our Lord crowned with thorns and bearing the cross, with a knight kneeling accompanied hy S. Louis, 1558. 2, A knight and lady kneeling before a Crucifix with S, Antony and S. Catherine of Sweden; beneath, a corpse; 1559. 3, The Good Shepherd with §. Henry presenting a knight and lady, who are kneeling. : The first place passed after we enter the Province of Liege, reached by a tunnel, 774 ft. long, pierced in the rock, is SEILLE, /., a Straggling village, the Church of which, rebuilt in 4550, has preserved its primitive Romanesque Tower : it contains |
