A very populous village, mainly indebted D9 for. its prosperity to a colossal industrial establishment foundedbs hy the late John Cockerill in 1817; and which is the largest andbs best manufactory of steam-engines and machinery on the continentsic At first he was joint-proprietor with king William I, whose sharegi. he purchased after the Rev. of 1830, and thus hecame sole prozo: prietor : since his death, which took place at Warsaw in 1840, ith has been worked by a company formed in March 1842. The areags occupied by the works amounts to nearly 150 acres, and includes! iron and coal-mines, a canal and railroad, numerous furnaces andi workshops of immense extent. Hexe iron goes through all theadl processes necessary to transform the ore into useful articles of alls sorts from steam-engines down to penknives. Between 3 andbs 4 thousand workmen are employed here besides 28 steam-enginess: equal to 1,000 horse-power. The porch or facade of this monstemo: establishment is formed by the anct. Palace of the Prince Bps. ofio Liege, erected at the beginning of the XVIII cent. To see thed works it is necessary to have a letter of introduction, which mays be obtained at the offices of the Company in Liege. On either side of the line are numerous furnaces which at night have the appearance of so many craters in eruption. 2 kil. Ouerie.
