From Namur GIVET. aisles by 2 rows of square pillars supporting round arches; the ibs windows of the nave are Romanesque, while those of the aisles a belong to the transition period; the choir is Romanesque with the 16: exception of the apse which is 1st pointed. Besides a Romanesque 41 fontand some stalls of XII cent. there is a slab incised witha the effigy of Alart de Hierges, 22nd Abbat of Waulsort, d. 1264 After crossing the R. Hermeton we pass the villages of HermEron-" sur-Meuse, 7., and Buaimont, rt.; the next place is Herr; near 4s this village is a quarry of red marble, after passing which we: cross the French frontier. The view of Givet from the top of the 9: hill is very picturesque. ; Giver. Inns: H. du Cygne; — H. du Mont d’Or ; — H. de ss VAncre. 4,327 Inhabs.” This town, prettily situated on the o Meuse, and fortified by Vauban, is connected by a bridge with a Charlemont; both these towns belong to France, lying just within the frontier. The fortress of Charlemont is situated on the summit ji of a rock of lime-stone commanding the passage of the river. i DILIGENCES : to Vireux daily from the H. de lAncre at5 a. m.; from jm the EH. Environs : BEAuRAING, 6 m. from Givet, is a small town celebra- |~ ted forits Castle, built in the XII cent., which after having be- - longed successively to the families of de Croy, de Berlaymont and 5 Beaufort, was burnt by the Jacobins of Givet in 1793; it has been (1 recently restored and handsomely furnished by the Duke of Ossuna. |. The Church of Ponprome, 4 1/2 m. beyond Beauraing, rebuilt 3: with the exception of one Romanesque arch supported by 2 col- - umns and forming the entrance to the nave, contains a fine cir- | - cular font, XII cent., supported by a cylindrical shaft and 4 col- |- umns resting on a square plinth; the exterior of the basin is |: adorned with arcading and 4 female heads in high relief: here is 2 also a Gothic pulpit? | The Castle of Bouitton, 23 m. beyond Pondrome, may also be | visited from here; the road thither is extremely uninteresting. i The road, which has again crossed to the 1. bank, passes the 4 villages of Han and Hisrers, at the latter of which are the ruins of | 1 acastle burnt in 1793 by the Jacobins of Givet.
