The distance from here to Florenville by road is 18 miles. ri you determine to follow the river which abounds in picturesquay scenery, it is hetter to engage a guide here; J. Milart knows thes country well. In this latter case you take the steep road thatii. leads up above the H. du Nord to the summit of the hill, thenc@sa: you descend to the Semois, alongside of which the pathway runsi at a height of about 50 ft. above the water to Donan, a poor vilali lage with a ruined castle; from here a good pathway leads toi Les Hayons, a little beyond which: you have to climb up and de=o! scend the Roche trouée and follow the river to its junction withilt the Ry des Alanes which you cross on the guide’s shoulders, thenus you ascend the hill to Ausy; near here is the grotto of S. Reso macle, the Apostle of the Ardennes, a nobleman, who, havingse become a monk when quite young was first of all made superionic of the Abbey of Solignac recently founded by S. Eloy, which hepa left at the request of Sigebert If to administer the monastery 7 founded by him at Cugnon: whilst Abbat here, be constructedhs this oratory to which he used frequently to retire (see his lifeb written in the X cent. by the chronicler Harigerus). On thebd death of S. Amandus in 648 he was chosen Bp. of Tongres, bubs having resigned that dignity in 660 he retired first to Malmedyyi and then to Stavelot where he died. Descending the hill you fordh1 the river and passing through the village of Cuenon, called Cusw=s congidinus in Sigehert’s deed of foundation, follow the hight: road to Hersevmonr (12 m. from Bouillon). A large village situated on a moun-«u tain crowned by a ruined castle of the XII cent. reduced to itsel Present conditionin the XVII cent. : the view from its site is exten-en sive and fine. The side of the mountain is pierced by a cavern called le lit de la Dame, because the wife of the castellan retired be thither during a siege; during the Rev. it served as a hiding-+e place for several French priests. Another magnificent view may. be obtained from the farm of Thibauroche near Mortehan, 2 miu from here on 1. of the river. There is a good road from here to Florenville past Coxgur where is an anct. priory, formerly dependent on the Abbey Orval, now in ruins, and S$. Crcite, where it joins the high roa Ds trom Bouillon ; about 3m. from here is Muyo, or Musnau, where 61 was ouce a priory founded in the X cent., but suppressed and bi given to the Jesuits of Liege in 1874.
