' | Environs : At Carienan,’a small town.on the Chiers, 4 1/2 man Hil j from here, is an anct: Chur ch. containing a caryed Ecce Hom@pr ; of XII cent.? At Avrora, 9 m. beyond Carignan, isa Ghurchilo of the XI cent.?, containing a pulpit of XII cent.?, and the tombin of Malandry, who met his death while defending Montmédy againsifer Louis XIV. About half-way between these 2 places is a moun=« tain with a chapel on its summit ded. to §.-Walfridus, whi preached the Gospel here in the VI cent. ; ROUTE 42. THE VALLEY OF THE LESSE.— DINANT TO ROCHEFORT, HANS SUR Al LESSE, S. HUBERT, NEUFCHATEAU AND ARLON. An agreeable pedestrian tour of 2 or 3 days. ‘The high road to Rochefort runs past Gelles, (see p- 288) { Sanzinue ‘and Ciergnon. The lover of the picturesque will prefer the bye-paths of crossaze country roads, or, if a good pedestrian, will ascend the course ofo the river. the scenery of which -will amply repay the trouble. Inkl the latter case he’ will do well to engage a guide on whose shoul-lx ders he may cross the river dry-footed. The most-picturesque por= tions of the valley lie~between Anseremme and Houyet, and Hauke and Resteigne. On leaving Dinant follow the road along the rt: bank and crossac the Lesse at its junction with the Meuse, then ascend the v alley byrd the pathway past the rocks of Newve-Batte, cross to the rt. bankén at Pont a Lessr, from whence there is a "good path to VAusainym where is an old “castle seated at the top of a rock; at'the foot ofo this rock ford the river and ascend the 1. bank to Cwavats, where: are some fine rocks projecting like spires, one of which, detachedds from the rest and rising like a pillar to a considerable height,ic bears‘the name of la Ghandelle: a little above Chal ais, ‘at ‘helt : junction of the Ry des Vesces and the Lesse, ford the river andbo Ayia hae: continue along the rt. bank; after ascending and descending the)! cs first hill, return to the 1. bank, and, when you arrive at the foobar of the mountain on which Hursontavx is seated, return to the rf again, pass through the copse, ascend the pathway up the hill, and, leaving Gon on your left, cross the Ivoine by the bridgéys about 400 yards above its junction with the Lesse; from this bridges there is a good pathway: through the royal demesne of Ardennesss 4 a hunting-seat of K.
