A little further on is Havers; in the island opposite it was formerly a castle of the roounts of Namur, demolished by Henry Il. After crossing the goilice, a small stream which forms the boundary of Belgium, we ctrive at : 'Fumay. Inu: 4. de la Poste. In the XII cent. it was called \umaing, and was even then celebrated for its extensive slate- risfaarries; in 1693 slates were sent from here to Spain to roof the faurch of §. James at Compostella. The town is most pictur- spsquely seated on a holm on the bank of a river, the houses being sJfauilt in rows one above another, while the summit is crowned by ") 9he Church. Close at hand are the Chapel of Diversmont, an jotact. priory of Hieronymite monks, reached by a fine avenue of jaime trees, and a chateau, the greater part of which is modern. iT) The road here abandons the Meuse, and, passing through Ro- rosRoY, a small fortress, in front of which the Grand Condé, at the ge of 22 years, won the greatest of his victories over the Spanish, 9 May 1643, does not rejoin it until Charleville. |The pathway along the 1. bank of the Meuse is good; after ‘igedassing the Rocher de Luve, an immense rock just above Fumal, {oitvhich causes the river to describe a considerable curve, we enter yy gjae wildest portion of the valley, which is in places no broader - gelaan the river itself, the slate yocks, which hem it in and here isfettain the height of 1300 ft. above the level of the sea, occasion- viilly rising perpendicularly from its hanks. At Revin a subter- ‘porfanean-canal has been cut to avoid a considerable bend in the «gviver, here crossed by a suspension-bridge. i Revin is an anct. town mentioned under the name of Ruivinium in a decd of 772 by which Pepin le Bref and his wife Bertrade jov@ave it to the Abbey of Prim. The Church is modern. gif? The pathway continues along the 1. bank as far as AucHanr, yollwwhere we cross to the rt.; a° little beyond this is the highest ssomountain in the valley, Ja Dame de Meuse, the summit of which ) 48 1335 ft. above the level of the sea; it isa grey rock rising per- sipasendicuiarly from the river ; between it and the next hill a stream, 4 |
